Cover Her
By Matilda Starbuck
The sun set as I crossed over
“Is she really dead?!?”
I’m floating,
floating away
“Yes…”
I’m fading
“But where do we hide her?”
“Under the tree, I brought a shovel.”
I’m invisible, but the figures of my friends remain
“Quick!”
Their shovel breaks the ground’s soft flesh
“Hurry, I hear something!”
Just like it did to me
“Get another shovel!”
They are digging now
“Cover her”
Digging my grave
“That’s enough, we have to get out of here!”
In the shade of the very tree we grew
“What do we do now?”
Now in the dark of the ground,
“We don’t tell anyone.”
I sleep alone.
